Anxiety Therapy in Atlanta
When you understand your anxiety perfectly well and it carries on anyway
Most people who come in for anxiety can already explain it. They know the thoughts are disproportionate, they know the feared thing is unlikely, and none of that knowledge reaches the part of them that is bracing.
That is not a failure of effort. Anxiety runs on a system that does not take instruction from the reasoning one. It responds to felt safety, which has to be built rather than argued for.
So we work with your body as well as your thinking, and we spend real time on what your anxiety is responding to — which, for a good number of my clients, turns out to be a nervous system that has been unaccommodated for years rather than a distortion needing correction.
This May Sound Familiar
- You can talk yourself through it logically and your body does not accept the argument
- The scanning runs constantly, even when nothing needs your attention
- Physical symptoms first — chest, stomach, jaw, shoulders — before you have identified a worry
- Sleep goes because the day gets reviewed at midnight
- You have done CBT, it helped somewhat, and something underneath is untouched
- Social situations are fine while they happen and cost you the entire evening afterwards
Anxiety that does not respond to understanding it is usually pointing at something the understanding has not reached yet.
What We Work On
Regulation you can actually access
Not the breathing exercise you already know and cannot remember at the moment it matters. Work on catching the escalation earlier, when there is still somewhere to intervene.
What is underneath it
Anxiety is frequently downstream of something else — unprocessed trauma, sustained masking, an environment that genuinely does not fit. Treating the symptom alone is why it keeps coming back.
Anxiety and neurodivergence
For autistic and ADHD adults, a great deal of what gets labelled anxiety is an accurate response to sensory overload or years of social misreading. That distinction changes the treatment completely.
Social anxiety and the recovery cost
Both the dread beforehand and the flattening afterwards, which rarely gets talked about and is often the more disruptive half.
The anxious parts of you
Internal Family Systems lets us meet the vigilant part rather than fight it. It is doing a job it was given a long time ago, and it stands down more readily when it is understood than when it is suppressed.
Living at a workable baseline
The goal is not zero anxiety, which is neither achievable nor desirable. It is a baseline that leaves room for the rest of your life.
How I Work
Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems, with experiential and person-centered work alongside. If you have already done cognitive work and hit a ceiling, this is a different route to the same target rather than more of the same.
Sessions are unhurried and low-pressure. There are fidgets, the lighting adjusts, and you are not required to arrive with your week already summarised.
Common Questions
- I have already tried CBT. Is this different?
- Yes. CBT works on the thoughts. Somatic and parts-based work goes at the felt sense underneath them, which is why it often reaches people for whom cognitive work helped and then plateaued. Many people find the CBT skills become more usable afterwards, once the body is less braced.
- Do you prescribe or manage medication?
- No. I am an Associate Professional Counselor, so I do not prescribe. Therapy works well alongside medication if you are taking it, and I am happy to coordinate with your prescriber. If medication is worth exploring, I can point you toward providers.
- Could my anxiety be something else?
- It is worth asking. For a lot of my clients, long-standing anxiety turned out to be the visible part of unidentified ADHD or autism, or of trauma that had never been addressed directly. We explore that rather than assuming the first label was the whole story.
- Do you work with teenagers on anxiety?
- Yes, from 13 upward. The approach is adapted for teens, and expectations about what parents are told are agreed at the start.
- Do you offer sessions online?
- Most sessions are in person at my Atlanta office, which tends to build the strongest working relationship. I also offer online sessions across Georgia when that fits your life better.
- How do we start?
- With a free 15-minute consultation. It is a short, low-pressure conversation about what is going on and whether working together makes sense. Nothing is committed to on that call.
